Professor Roberto FERRARI trained at the Bologna School of Medicine. He works as Professor of Cardiology at the University of Ferrara and is director of Cardiology at Santa Anna University Hospital of Ferrara. He is also director of the of Salvatore Maugeri Cardiovascular Research Center of Brescia. He is president elect of the European Society of Cardiology (2008-2010) and was Vice-President and Chairman of the Education Committee (2002-2004). He was also president of the World Section of the International Society for Heart Research (2004-2007). He was councillor of the Board of the Italian Society of Cardiology (1996-2000) and Member of the Scientific Committee (1996-2002), and Councillor of the Board of the Italian Federation of Cardiology (1996-1999).
He is interested in the characterization of the molecular mechanisms of the ischemic and failing myocardium and in the clinical treatment of myocardial ischemia and heart failure, with a particular emphasis on interdisciplinary and collaborative studies.
He has been involved in the steering committees of several multicenter trials, including EUROPA, PREAMI, SENIORS, PACMAN, BEAUTIFUL, and STRATEGY.
He was Editor of the European Heart Journal Supplement (2004–2006) and SIC and Simpliciter (2001-2006), and he is currently the editor of Dialogues in Cardiovascular Medicine. He is member of the Editorial Board of Cardiovascular Drugs and Therapy, Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology, Journal of Applied Cardiology, Cardioscience, Journal of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, Cardiovascular Research, Basic Research in Cardiology, Canadian Journal of Cardiology, British Heart Journal, and European Heart Journal.
He has written 23 books and over 600 peer-reviewed papers on various topics, including basic research, pathophysiology, and clinical investigation of ischemic heart disease and heart failure. He is the President of the European Society of Cardiology (2008-2010), and an Executive Committee Member for the BEAUTIfUL and SIGNIfY trials and the CLARIfY registry.

Professor Ian FORD trained at Glasgow and obtained a PhD in Statistics. He is a Fellow of the International Statistical Institute, Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. He is currently Director at the Robertson Centre for Biostatistics, which has acted as a data and/or statistical center for a number of major completed clinical trials (IMAGES, PROSPER, WOSCOPS, TIBET, IONA, CAPRICORN) and ongoing trials (BEAUTIFUL), and Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Glasgow.
He has participated in the design, running, and interpretation of clinical trials since 1986, with a particular emphasis on trials in the cardiovascular field, including stroke. He has had a lead role in trials funded by research councils, charities, government agencies, and the pharmaceutical industry.
He has a particular interest in using routinely collected data in the conduct of trials and in applying new technologies to enhance the quality and speed of delivery of trials (MRC funded e-Science project VOTES). He has wide experience of Data Monitoring Committee, and currently chairs 3 and is a member of 5 others. He currently serves on the steering committees of four cardiovascular trials that are ongoing or close to initiation. His experience covers the full breadth of cardiovascular medicine, with additional experience in trials in many other areas, including surgery, sleeping disorders, asthma, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and rare genetic diseases such as Fabry’s disease and Hunter’s syndrome. He is a member of the Cholesterol Trialists’ Collaboration and the Fibrinogen Studies Collaboration.
He is also member of the American Statistical Association, Statisticians in the Pharmaceutical Industry, Drug Information Association, Royal Statistical Society, International Society for Clinical Biostatistics, and International Statistical Institute.
He is a member of the Editorial Board of Heart, Journal of Evaluation in Clinical Practice, and Public Library of Science Medicine.

Professor STEG has been a Professor of Cardiology in Université Paris VII - Denis Diderot, since 1994. He works as interventional cardiologist and is director of the Coronary Care Unit of Hôpital Bichat-Claude Bernard in Paris, France. He is also director of the research team “Clinical Research in Atherothrombosis”, in INSERM U-698, Hôpital Bichat-Claude Bernard, Paris.

Professor STEG’s research interests are in the field of coronary artery disease. He is involved in studies of mechanical and pharmacologic intervention in acute myocardial infarction, but has also recently turned his attention to secondary prevention, long-term risk assessment, and management of atherothrombosis. He is a former president of the Thrombosis Working Group of the French Society of Cardiology and belongs to the nucleus of the Thrombosis Working Group of the European Society of Cardiology. He is a former member of the Institut Universitaire de France, a fellow of the European Society of Cardiology, American College of Cardiology, and American College of Chest Physicians, and former chairman of the Public Relations Committee of the European Society of Cardiology.
Professor STEG participated in the steering or executive committees of trials such as CAPTIM, GUSTO-V, CHARISMA, OASIS-5 and 6, and was the principal investigator of investigator-driven and industry-sponsored clinical trials and registries. He is co-chair of the GRACE and the REACH Registries publication committees. He was DMC (Data Monitoring Commitee) or CEC member or chair for several large trials. Dr Steg has authored more than 300 articles in peer-reviewed international journals, and is a member of the editorial board for Circulation, JAMA, the European Heart Journal, and Theheart.org. He is a member of the Task Force updating the ESC guidelines on the management of acute myocardial infarction in patients presenting with ST segment elevation, a member of the international ESC/ACC-AHA/WHF/WHO task force for the definition of myocardial infarction, and a member of the Guideline Committee for the VIII ACCP Guidelines for Antithrombotic Therapy.
